Build a House → What our clients say

Five star service *****

“A totally professional and very approachable team who are so easy to deal with. We had numerous meetings until everything we wanted was put down on paper. Would definitely use this firm again.”

—Daniel Davila

Would 100% recommend

“We looked at four different architects because we were unsure of how much XUL had done in the Hampstead Garden Suburbs. Other practices were way behind in creativity and presentation. XUL saw things that others didn’t and saw the potential of the house. The turn-around time was also exceptional. If I had to do it all again, they would be my architects.”

—Julliette and Michael Overlander

Fantastic Architecture practice

“They get the balance right between listening to brief, stretching ideas and sticking to budget constraints. I would wholeheartedly recommend. They are a delight to deal with!”

—Rachel Summerfield

A trustworthy and highly creative company

“We experienced XUL as a thoroughly dependable and trustworthy creative team which acted as a supportive partner throughout the project we worked on together. Sebastian got involved in every aspect of the process, and the external consultants he brought in were consistently excellent, contributing greatly to the results achieved. I recommend XUL for any architectural project you may be considering: you will get more than you imagine, including a fulfilling and enjoyable relationship with some deeply committed and creative people.”

Build a House → Our Guide to Building a House

If you are thinking about building a house from scratch, there is an awful lot that needs to be considered. This is a big decision for anyone. There is no denying that the process can be long and often stressful too when compared with simply purchasing a house (although that tends to have a lot of stress involved as well!). However, when you have a house that meets your exact wants and wishes at the end of it, most people would agree that it is more than worth it. So, with that being said, read on to discover some of the key things you need to know about building a property.

What are the benefits of building a house?

– You can add the latest technology to your property at the design stage
– You can make your property sustainable
– Your home will be built to fit your exact preferences and needs
– You can often build something that is bigger than you would be able to buy for the same money
– You can typically save around 30 per cent on the market value

Where are you going to be able to build a house?

Of course, your first consideration when building a house is where you are going to build it. There are some websites that can assist in terms of finding plots. However, this does not mean you cannot be proactive. If you have a certain area or location in mind, why not drive around to look for any possible opportunities? You can then go on the local authority website for the area, where you can scan through the planning applications. Google Maps can also be useful here too. Plots aren’t going to just fall into your lap, so in order to secure one you are going to need to be savvy with your approach.

Building the property

When it comes to the build stage, there are many different factors that need to be considered. The construction system is one of the most important. There are lots of choices here, including natural materials, cross laminated timber, an oak frame, insulated concrete formwork, structural insulated panels, a timber frame, and masonry. You will also need to apply for planning permission, have plans drawn up by an experienced architect, and find the right builder for the job. Also, you need to think about where you are going to live during the project as well as how you are going to bring services to the site. This can cost a lot of the location is an awkward one.

As you can see, there is a lot that needs to be considered when building a property. However, there is no denying that there are a lot of benefits that are associated with this as well. If you want to build your own property, then one thing you will need to do is arm yourself with an experienced and qualified architect who can help you to make your vision a reality. They will know everything that is needed to help you along the way, from dealing with access issues to planning permission matters.
