Barnet may not be broadly known for its architecture, but it has been celebrating a particular excellence in local architecture thanks to the Delivering for Barnet Architecture Awards. The awards are the perfect way to show how proud the borough is of its architects and their work.
Barnet has a long and rich history of architecture, with some of the borough’s most iconic buildings dating back centuries. Barnet is home to several Grade I and II listed buildings and a plethora of architectural styles typical of London.
Some of the most notable Barnet buildings include All Saints’ Church, dating back to the 12th century, and Barnet House, a Grade II listed building built in the 16th century.
Barnet also has several modern buildings of architectural note, including the Hive Leisure Centre and Brent Civic Centre.
Delivering for Barnet Architecture Award is about celebrating the great work that Barnet architects have done for the area. The awards are key for Barnet because they show that the area is committed to its architecture and improving the local environment.
In fact, XUL Architecture won this award for their project Hale Lane in 2017 and was singled out for special recognition. This rear extension features a glass link that separates it from the existing house, while seamlessly connecting to the green outdoor space. It’s a great example of taking an old, unloved property and bringing it up to date with generous, light-filled spaces that feel inspiring and uplifting.
The awards are a way to show off what Barnet architects can do in the area. If you are an architect or know someone who is deserving of this prize, be sure to get behind Barnet and nominate them for the next Delivering for Barnet Architectures Awards.
The Delivering for Barnet Architecture Awards is a highly prestigious event that honours the very best in architecture from across the borough.
Hale Lane itself was praised for its contemporary design and light-filled use of space. The project was also commended for its sustainable features, including a rainwater harvesting system and solar panels.
The award is a massive accolade for us here XUL Architecture and is a testament to the high quality of our work. It is also a fantastic achievement for Barnet, which is now home to what we believe is some of the best architecture in the country.
The Delivering for Barnet Architecture Awards have helped improve Barnet’s reputation and architectural development.
Firstly, the awards showcase the borough as a place where world-class architecture is created, in turn helping to attract investment and creative new businesses to the area.
Secondly, the awards allow local architects to showcase their work on a national stage. This helps to put Barnet on the map as a centre for architectural excellence.
Finally, the awards help raise the profile of architecture in Barnet and encourage more people to take an interest in their surroundings and the built environment. We believe this helps to create a truly thriving place where people want to live and work.
The Delivering for Barnet Architecture Awards puts a spotlight on the borough’s architects, which just so happen, we believe, to be some of the best in the country.
