Self Build Homes → What our clients say
Five star service *****
“A totally professional and very approachable team who are so easy to deal with. We had numerous meetings until everything we wanted was put down on paper. Would definitely use this firm again.”
Would 100% recommend
“We looked at four different architects because we were unsure of how much XUL had done in the Hampstead Garden Suburbs. Other practices were way behind in creativity and presentation. XUL saw things that others didn’t and saw the potential of the house. The turn-around time was also exceptional. If I had to do it all again, they would be my architects.”
—Julliette and Michael Overlander
Fantastic Architecture practice
“They get the balance right between listening to brief, stretching ideas and sticking to budget constraints. I would wholeheartedly recommend. They are a delight to deal with!”
A trustworthy and highly creative company
“We experienced XUL as a thoroughly dependable and trustworthy creative team which acted as a supportive partner throughout the project we worked on together. Sebastian got involved in every aspect of the process, and the external consultants he brought in were consistently excellent, contributing greatly to the results achieved. I recommend XUL for any architectural project you may be considering: you will get more than you imagine, including a fulfilling and enjoyable relationship with some deeply committed and creative people.”
Self Build Homes → Our Guide to Self Build Homes
Are you thinking about a self build home? There is no denying that self build homes represent the ultimate dream for a lot of people. However, undertaking a large project is not without its difficulties. After all, there are so many different elements of a self build project and so there are many different factors that need to be taken into account. However, most people will tell you that it is definitely worth it. After all, this is the only way that you are going to benefit from a property that is completely tailored to you and your needs. Plus, when you look at it from this perspective, it can often mean that you are going to get a lot more bang for your buck.
What is a self build?
There are around 11,000 self build homes constructed per annum. A self build property is an individual house that an individual homeowner has commissioned so that it fits their exact tastes and requirements to perfection. However, it is worth pointing out that less than ten per cent of homeowners are physically involved in the building work process.
How much is it going to cost you to build your own home?
Based on statistics, the average cost is somewhere between £1,000 and £3,000/m2. Nevertheless, there are, of course, so many different factors that are going to impact the cost of your self build. This includes all of the following:
– Your involvement – You may be able to substantially reduce your build costs if you are able to take on some of the work yourself. However, this should only be done if you have the experience to do so, otherwise, you could end up spending a lot more money in the long-run.
– Specification – You can expect your build costs to rise by a considerable degree if you want premium products.
Number of storeys – In terms of land use, multiple storeys are going to make better use of the space, and this can lower the roof costs and foundation expenses per m2.
– Layout, shape, and plan – The most cost-effective and straightforward floor plan is square.
– Size – Naturally, the bigger the property is, the more it is going to cost to build. However, you can achieve economies of scale with a careful design, so it is important to keep this in mind.
– Location – Labour costs and land prices will vary across the United Kingdom.
All things considered, there is no denying that self build houses represent the perfect way for people to get the most value for their money because they are going to have a property constructed that is completely tailored to their wants and needs. However, there is also no getting away from the fact that there is a lot that needs to be considered. One of the most important elements is finding an experienced and high quality architect who can be by your side throughout; helping you to navigate the process.
