Unlocking the benefits of ADHD-informed design: An interview with ‘The Times’
XUL’s Director and Founding Partner, Maia Lemlij, recently sat down with The Times’ Francesca Specter to discuss the positive impact neurodiverse-first design can bring to our homes.
It’s no secret how overstimulating cluttered, noisy, harshly-lit living spaces can be. But for those living with ADHD, or other neurodiverse conditions, the impact can feel all too much.
Maia discusses how her own ADHD diagnosis back in 2020 has greatly influenced her design ethos, along with key pointers on how to make homes more ADHD-friendly.
From lighting to colour to storage, there are a range of simple yet impactful adjustments that can transform our spaces from cluttered to calm – useful to both neurodiverse and neurotypical households.
ADHD-informed design may feel overly niche to some, but it can be hugely beneficial to us all as everyone is sensitive to light, sound and visual clutter to a degree. Human-first design, with neurodiversity in mind, is a key stepping stone toward mitigating the negative, overstimulating effects of these elements. It is only then that you can create a truly comfortable home that delivers everything you need to thrive.
