History of Royal Connaught Park
With a history stretching back over 100 years, Royal Connaught Park boasts a journey that takes twists and turns. From its early development to the modern day, there is always something for individuals, and maybe even future residents, to uncover along the way. For anybody interested in the history of this prestigious and highly unique property, or maybe even finding their next family home, here is the history of Royal Connaught Park.
The Beginnings
It began as a plan. In 1900, Royal Connaught Park began its life as designs for a brand new school in Bushey. The lead architects on this project were Gordon & Gunton, of Scotland, and they were hired by the Royal Masonic School for Boys. The Park was concocted as a replacement for Wood Green, the former home of the school. With this move, the school hoped to accommodate more students and also improve its reputation with grounds and building that is suitable for the Royal establishment.
A Royal Connection
In 1903, the construction finally began, and this came with a royal connection. The park’s namesake Prince Arthur was in attendance and laid the foundation stone. As the third son of Queen Victoria and the Duke of Connaught, this action demonstrated how important the site development was, not only for the students but also the monarchy and the local community. This foundation stone is still there today, and any royalist visitors can witness a small but interesting piece of royal history.
Developing Hands and Minds of the Future
After the construction was completed, Royal Connaught Park opened its doors and began developing the hands and minds of the future. From the early 1900s and beyond, the school attracted budding masons who were happy to let their teachers explain everything they needed to know as they hone their craft and prepare themselves for their future.
By 1939, at the onset of the Second World War, the school has over 800 boys in attendance. Although this was their peak for admissions. In post-war Britain, the culture shifted, and by 1970, the upper school chose to combine with the local junior school. It started to accept boys from the age of eleven to learn their masonic craft.
Ever-Evolving Purpose
However, this change did not last long. In 1970, the Royal Masonic School for Boys announced its closure. In its place, the European wing of the United States International University opened. It remained this way for many years and even underwent restoration projects during this time. In 1998, Comer Homes purchased the property and began to consider the future of the park and the halls. In the meantime, it continued to operate as a university.

Throughout the 1980sm and 1990s, Royal Connaught Park was often the go-to location for a classy filming location that captured the essence of British Heritage. Across film and TV, Royal Connaught Park served as a reliable filming location for Monty Python’s The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life, Pink Floyd: The Wall, The Avengers (not the Marvel franchise, though), and Harry Potter.
These are just a taste of the 400-plus productions that have taken place somewhere within the walls or on the park’s grounds.

The University still operated in the early 21st century and did not officially close its doors until 2009. This came after Comer Homes had owned the property for nearly a decade. Excavations had begun around the property in 2006, and plans began to formulate regarding the future of Royal Connaught Park.
So what can you find there now? Early work considered how to turn the teaching and residential blocks into apartments, while parties were also able to book the venue for weddings and other special events.
The development strategy emphasised retaining the historical design both inside and out. Although the interior has been modernised to suit the comfort demands of today, there is still a strong and easily distinguishable link to the park’s beginnings.
And this matches with the luxury appeal that developers have strived to create. Besides the sophisticated apartments, there is also a wealth of amenities, including a fitness centre and swimming pool for residents.
A lot has changed in the past 120 years, but Royal Connaught Park remains an attractive and even crucial element of London life.
