Do you use up-to-date technology?

The architecture profession is constantly innovating and coming up with new creative ideas and ways of working. We have access to a wide range of tools and technical software that weren’t even possible ten years ago. We can now push the boundaries of design, step into spaces in 3D, and help a client better visualize their project before committing and beginning work.
Here we explore just some of the ways architects use up-to-date technology to help them work:
3D Modelling Software
While architects have worked in 2D using architectural plans for centuries, in more recent years, we have been able to visualise spaces in 3D. These programs allow us to create digital representations of buildings and structures, which can be manipulated and viewed from almost any angle. We can animate spaces, create realistic renders to see how the light will fall in a space at any time of the year. We find that it really helps clients get a feel for what their home might look like when it is finished.
Virtual Reality
Virtual reality is another technology that has revolutionised architecture. With VR, architects can create immersive experiences that simulate real-life environments. We can walk a client through their project and allow them to experience it in a way that was previously impossible.
Virtual reality is also useful in the design process as it allows architects to identify any issues with the design before construction begins.
Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital representation of a building or structure that includes its physical and functional characteristics. BIM software allows architects to create detailed 3D models of buildings, which can be used to analyse different design options and optimise the planning, design, and build journey. BIM software aids workflow, facilitating collaboration between architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders, allowing for a more streamlined design and construction process.
Drones
Drones have become increasingly popular in the architectural world, as they allow architects to obtain detailed images of sites and existing buildings from angles we might never be able to reach. This technology is particularly useful in the early stages of a project, as it allows us to assess the site and understand its surroundings from a distance. Once the project is on-site, drones can also be used to monitor construction progress and provide clients with visual updates.
Sustainable Design Tools
We know that sustainable design is becoming increasingly important to our clients. Sustainable design tools allow architects to easily analyze the environmental impact of a building, identify ways to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, and choose eco-friendly materials in a clear, quantifiable way. It allows us to balance the aesthetics of a building with the environmental practicalities.
Technical innovation is at the heart of everything we do. These are just a few examples of the many technologies that architects are using today to help them develop their ingenious designs. We’re always looking for ways to see ideas and solutions in a new light. Up-to-date technology allows us to inspire our clients and think radically about the way we build and experience spaces.
